Standard vs AI Voice on Listeny
Listeny offers two ways to hear your text. Pick the mode that fits your privacy preferences, language needs, and audio quality expectations.
Standard mode
In Standard mode, text and PDFs are processed entirely in your browser. Your files are not uploaded to Listeny servers.
Standard uses voices already installed on your device, which often includes multiple languages. Playback starts immediately with no network round trip for synthesis.
AI Voice mode
If you choose AI Voice or download an MP3, only the text needed to synthesize audio is sent to our secure speech proxy on Cloudflare Workers. That text is forwarded to Microsoft’s speech service to generate audio. We do not store your raw text in a database or user account.
AI Voice uses Microsoft neural English voices and supports MP3 download for offline listening. Use it when you want a more natural tone for long English articles or PDFs.
Latency and offline listening
Standard mode begins speaking as soon as your browser voice loads — helpful on flights or spotty Wi-Fi after the page is open. AI Voice sends short text chunks to our secure worker, which adds a brief network delay but returns richer English audio you can download as MP3 for offline playlists.
Which should I use?
- Privacy-first or non-English content: Standard.
- English neural quality or MP3 export: AI Voice.
- Unsure: Try Standard first; switch voices in the player anytime.
You can change modes per document — many readers use Standard for quick foreign-language checks and AI Voice for long English articles they want to download as MP3 study tracks.
Frequently asked questions
- Does AI Voice work on mobile data?
- Yes, but it uses more data than Standard because audio is generated remotely. Standard mode is preferable on metered connections once the page has loaded.
- Can I switch modes mid-PDF?
- Yes — open the player settings and change voice type. Your reading position stays saved locally while you experiment with quality versus privacy.
